Rage. Aggression. Abhorrence. Sound pelted with a raw fury that could only be found in the natural destruction the Earth brings down upon us - these ideas infuse the scorched frame of Ferus Din’s The Great Undying. The band embraces the cacophonous nature of traditional black metal as a backdrop for sprawling, tightly composed epics that chronicle humanity’s demise, Earth’s fury, and that which awakens to conquer all that is left. The music is bombastic and feral at its core, wound through with imploring woodwinds evocative of Celtic influences. The flute gives a furtive glimpse of the heart of our world; it is the sweet sound of the wind that plays on, oblivious, while Ferus Din conducts the orchestra of destruction it has brought.
- Description by Ryan Ruple
Ferus Din is a collaborative metal tour-de-force composed of members of several long-established Western New York bands. The group is the brainchild of Andrew Hellskald McGirr (guitars and vocals for
black metal outfit Hubris) and Allana Sturm (woodwinds and vocals for folk metallers Throne of Wilderness), with the goal of bringing flutes into heavier, darker realms of metal. Andrew and Allana's compositional expertise is paired with the technical mastery of CW Dunbar (drums for Hubris and Pig Rectum) and Joe Leising (guitars for Pig Rectum, Enthauptung, et.al.) to create the enigma of Ferus Din: a classically-driven black metal monster with the passion and hellfire of 2nd-wave BM, the grimy need-for-speed of old thrashers, and the treacherous wizardry of tech death. Ferus Din's songs and lyrics explore Earth's prehistory, the cycles of life and life-ending disaster that laid the foundations for our very existence; they look to mythologies new and old, from Beowulf to Star Trek, and to the terrifying wonders of science. These concepts inspire Ferus Din to push the metal envelope further into new twisted and beautiful domains, where their discoveries will be as endlessly terrifying as the galaxies of their music.
